Cross-Institutional Workshop on Virtual Teaching and Learning - A New Era of Education: Learning in the Metaverse
Date: 15 December 2022, Thursday
Time: 12:30 – 14:00
Format: Online via Zoom platform
The “Metaverse” has come into the spotlight in recent years and is heralded as a future trend in education. With the application of disruptive technologies, the Metaverse opens up a wealth of new educational opportunities. These include how the Metaverse provides students with an immersive learning experience without physical boundaries. The Metaverse could be widely adopted in multiple disciplines and on different levels. In this workshop, five speakers from different disciplines across four institutions are invited to share their insights, practical experience, opportunities and challenges concerning the application of Metaverse in Education. Their sharing will cover good practices and projects at both institutional and individual levels.
This workshop arises from an IICAs (Inter-institutional Collaborative Activities) Project under the VTL Grant led by CUHK – “Establishing Effective Virtual Teaching Strategies to Support Learning beyond Classroom”.
Developing a Learning Scene on Metaverse
In this talk, we will give a preliminary report on the development of an interactive learning scene on the Metaverse. This learning scene attempts to model and simulate the sea turtle ecosystem in northern Australia as affected by global warming and climate changes. This project allows cross-border, cross-cultural, and cross-disciplinary student collaboration on a sustainability issue. Our goal is to deploy this learning scene on the Metaverse so as to arouse social concern over this issue. In this talk, we will also discuss the enabling technologies and the challenges we faced in this project.
Dr Martin CHOY, Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Science, Hong Kong Baptist University
Dr Choy received his B.Eng., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, all in Information Engineering. In July 2008, he joined Department of Computer Science at the Hong Kong Baptist University and now serves as a Senior Lecturer. His area of interests includes platform based development, computer graphics and data visualisation.
Metaverse for Entrepreneurial education, an experience sharing
HKUST has been actively exploring the use of Metaverse experience in its entrepreneurial education courses for the last few years. The deployments involved 2D to 3D, also the integration of day-to-day personal learnings/reflections to team-based collaborations in multiple courses. These new learning paradigms fit well into the Entrepreneurial Experiential based education and design thinking frameworks. Deployment has involved diverse learner backgrounds, involving students from multiple disciplines (namely Business, Engineering, Science, and Social Science at HKUST) from different ages, gender, ethnic groups, and also across different universities. The team has also been working with high schools in HK to introduce these pedagogical elements to secondary education especially involving personal reflections, career planning, as well as team interactions.
Professor Erwin HUANG, Adjunct Professor, Division of Integrative System and Design, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
Professor Erwin Huang, is the associate director of the Technology Leadership and Entrepreneurship program at the HKUST. Erwin is a serial entrepreneur with extensive technology, business and social innovation experiences before joining university education.
Exhibition Go Virtual: Immersive Experience in the Metaverse
Moving forward to the new era of the Metaverse, the Expo 2022 intends to go virtual by holding the poster exhibition physically and online. Over 50 posters have been displayed online at the virtual exhibition venue - a 3D model of the Lee Shau Kee Building, CUHK. Participants can explore different types of active learning classrooms from a first-person perspective. Moreover, they can interact with each other and share ideas similar to what they do in the real world. In this talk, Ms. Provides NG will share the design and implementation of the exhibition platform. In addition, Prof. Paul Lam will share several uncharted research opportunities for the application of virtual classrooms.

Metaverse: A New Way to Teach and Learn
The Metaverse is widely regarded as being the next iteration of the Internet, one that will give rise to a greater fusion of the real and virtual worlds. In the Metaverse as commonly conceived today, many have focused on the opportunities for businesses and different forms of social engagement. The Metaverse also holds significant promise for education, particularly with simulated learning and education that can overcome physical boundaries.
