Presentation Title

Integration of Virtual and face-to-face teaching: Social-media-type Interaction and Starter Mini-Talks

Presentation Abstract
The teaching and learning mode has undergone subtle changes since the start of the pandemic in 2019. While virtual teaching was the only viable option during the pandemic, some students expressed a desire for face-to-face instruction. Conversely, when teaching has returned to an in-person format in the post-pandemic era, students may seek some form of virtual learning. In this presentation, I will outline my strategies to integrate virtual and in-person teaching using a social-media-type e-learning platform and starter mini-talks.

The e-learning platform promotes student interaction by using simple gestures like thumbs up or sliding a rating bar. Statistical evidence demonstrates that it indeed encourages textual discussions, making it a new norm for educational interaction. The platform also offers pop-up learning recommendations, similar to video suggestions on online video platforms. It enriches students' educational experience.

The starter mini-talks are five-minute in-person presentations on topics not covered in the formal syllabus. They aim to spark students' interest and prepare them for the upcoming lectures. We found that students are more motivated to seek out additional knowledge, giving them a psychological sense of gaining an edge. The talks also consist of short programming codes. It answers students' calls to learn short coding examples.

POP (Performance-Based Assessment in Open-Ended Problem-Based Learning)

Presentation Abstract
Within the "POP" approach, Prof. Raymond Kai-yu Tong, a highly regarded and passionate educator, empowers students to "Think Big, Dream Big, and Achieve Limitless Success" through performance-based assessment in open-ended problem-based learning. With over 20 years of teaching experience, Prof. Tong has received numerous accolades, including the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award and CUHK's University Education Award.

Prof. Tong's teaching methodology focuses on motivating students to become active learners, exploring their potentials and surpassing their limitations. He embraces learner-centred approaches, implementing the POP approach to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This pedagogy emphasizes solving problems with no clear-cut solutions, enabling students to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios.

One of Prof. Tong's innovative courses is "Medical Instrumentation and Design," where students tackle clinical challenges by developing technological solutions. Groups of students collaborate, employing their skills and techniques to overcome these challenges. Remarkably, multiple solutions are encouraged, fostering creativity and problem-solving diversity. Clinical professionals are invited as assessors, providing valuable feedback and evaluations.

In addition to the Design course, Prof. Tong has jointly created the "Buddy Scheme with International Students" and the "Ambassador Scheme." These initiatives cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment, fostering cultural immersion experiences and multidisciplinary collaborations. Students engage in group projects and activities, broadening their perspectives and enhancing their interpersonal skills.

Prof. Tong's dedication to teaching extends beyond the classroom. He believes in tapping into students' potential, helping them develop holistically and preparing them for future success. By challenging students to think big, fostering creativity, and promoting self-fulfillment, Prof. Tong has made a significant impact on their learning, growth, and overall development.

Through the POP approach, Prof. Tong revolutionizes traditional teaching methodologies, providing students with the tools to tackle complex problems, think critically, and excel. His commitment to innovative education has earned him recognition and admiration from both his students and the academic community. With his guidance, students are inspired to embrace challenges, reach their full potential, and achieve limitless success.

Presentation Title

How Do We Nurture A New Generation of Physician-Leaders? Lessons Learnt from the Global Physician-Leadership Stream (GPS) of the Medicine Programme

Presentation Abstract

The Global-Physician-Leadership Stream (GPS) Team is led by Prof Simon Ng with core members including Prof Justin Wu, Prof Vincent Mok, Prof Albert Li, and Prof Winnie Chu from different academic departments of the Faculty of Medicine. Prof Ng and his team members are all firm believers in personalised education, experiential learning, and inspiring the next generation through effective mentoring, and these core elements constitute the main teaching philosophy of the GPS curriculum.

Established in 2013, GPS is the first leadership programme for medical undergraduates in Asia, with the mission of nurturing a new generation of physician-leaders who possess additional skill sets (including in-depth research methodologies, inter-disciplinary collaboration skills, perspectives in global healthcare, and medical leadership) to tackle complex challenges for the betterment of Hong Kong and the community at large. Such skill sets are not covered in the traditional medical curriculum. Over the past decade, GPS has prospered as a highly successful programme with excellent student learning outcomes in different areas including research, humanitarian work, international exposure, and leadership activities.

GPS is a pilot educational innovation initially designed for a small subgroup of academically capable and highly motivated medical students who aspire to become future leaders in the medical sector. Over the years, concerted efforts have been made to ‘scale up’ the programme to strive towards its ultimate goal of enhancing the current medical curriculum at a system level in order to benefit more medical students and even to benefit other programmes within and outside the Faculty.
